Raison d’être

The Crafty Cook Nook is your hotspot for recipes, memoir, and place-based storytelling. Memory, place, and family matter, and these topics are almost always connected to food for me.

My traveler/chef inspiration?

Anthony Bourdain. I don’t drop the f-bomb as much as he does, but I hope to imbue the food, places, and people I’ve encountered with an equal measure of humor and earnest appreciation.

Besides being the creator and author of The Crafty Cook Nook, I’m a reformed academic and a recovering MFA student with a novel in the works. When I’m not working at the Colorado state capitol as a legislative editor, I can be found with my nose in a book, my hands covered in soy sauce, or my person out and about in Denver taking in the sights or hiking and running in the Rocky Mountain region.

Thanks for joining me on this food-centric journey.

  1. I’ve just been having a bit of a read through your blog and I love it! You write so beautifully and have some fab recipes on here… 🙂

    1. gwynnem says:

Thank you so much! It’s an honor to have other folks reading my stories. Hopefully you’ll get to try out some of the recipes, too. 🙂

  2. Great recipe and great writer…..well done!!!!

    1. gwynnem says:

Thanks so much, massiscooking. I’m excited to add another great blog like yours to my daily wordpress reading and viewing, too. The food arrangement in your photographs are stellar.

  3. First off I want to thank you Ma’am for following my blog. Second I want to say
I read a bit of yours and found it worth keeping close at hand ( for quick reference). My own recipes go pretty far back, I try to preserve the history of my family and my people with them. I hope someday you get a chance to try some out 🙂 JW

    1. gwynnem says:

Thanks, JW. I’m putting your blog recipes on my list of ones to try out!

      1. I just finished copying your shrimp, rice, salad (I forgot it’s name!). It sounds really good. I like your post because you add pictures too. Some folks post are soooo sterile even though the recipes are good. It’s hard to feel welcome in reading their post. Another thing I like about your blog is you add personal stuff in it. It gets the reader to know you as a person and not just a blogger. I post my recipes like I was sitting there talking to you in my kitchen. Like my campfireshadow westerns, I love to tell a story. My first attempt at writing was the book (you can download the pdf) about Maw Maw. Much of it is fiction mixed with real events of the life of an old woman living in the hills of West Virginia. I think you’d enjoy it 🙂 JW

I have nominated your blog for the I’m NOT Featured On Freshly Pressed Award.

More about this nomination is at

    http://dearkitty1.wordpress.com/2014/01/15/im-not-featured-on-freshly-pressed-award-thanks-horty/

  42. Hi there!

Firstly, how are you? I hope you’re doing well! J I’m Nell from ineedafeed.wordpress.com, and I’m emailing to ask if you’d be interested in participating in the Writing Process Blog Tour. It’s not obligatory, but it is quite fun, and I’d love to see what your responses are. My posting date will be the 9th of June, and yours will be the 16th of June – but don’t worry, I’m not going to enforce that! If you can’t make it, you can’t make it. J And the posting date for the three people you guy pick will be the 23rd of june, and the people they pick will post on the 30th, etc.

So pretty much what you need to do is:

Step 1: Acknowledge the person and the site that involved you in the blog tour. My blog is http://ineedafeed.wordpress.com
Step 2: Answer the 4 questions below about your writing process.

    1. What are you working on?
    2. How does your work differ from others of its genre?
    3. Why do you write what you do?
    4. How does your writing process work?

Step 3: Say who your three choices of bloggers are, and give a brief bio and link to the website of each of them. Again, their date will be the 23rd of june.

So please let me know whether you’re interested as soon as possible, either through a comment on my blog, or through email: daidjou@gmail.com. And have a fantastic day!
    Happy eating
    Nell

    1. gwynnem says:

I am interested, Nell. In my response, am I focusing just on my food blogging writing process?

      Thanks!

      1. 😀 You don’t just have to focus on the food blogging writing if you have other writing processes that you also want to talk about. 🙂 I’d be interested in hearing about both food blogging writing, and non-food blogging writing. 🙂

  43. I love your bio. I, too, am a recovering academic (almost three decades). Your blog is a pleasure. (I once worked at Cooking Light!)

    1. gwynnem says:

Thank you, Catherine. Coming from a professional food writing reader, this means a great deal to me. 🙂 What kind of work were you doing with Cooking Light?

  44. Ellie Altman says:

I don’t remember how I stumbled on your blog but am a loyal reader (and recipe tester) of a couple of months. How did you learn to be such a fabulous cook. I admire you so much for making time to do and do well so many life affirming things. You have enriched my life and inspired me.

    1. gwynnem says:

Thank you for stumbling over here. This blog has been a great teacher for writing discipline that’s helped me stay focused on my fiction writing, too, and it’s been such a gift to meet folks from all over the country and the world who share a love of cooking and storytelling. Hope you’re staying warm this winter and that my recipes and stories get you cooking in the kitchen and out for nature walks no matter the weather. 🙂 Best wishes!
